Earth Day at Sonnet

“Do your little bit of good where you are;
it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”
—Desmond Tutu

The 54th Earth Day was on April 22nd, and we observed a weeklong celebration of the beautiful place we call home, spending lots of time outdoors and learning how we can take care of it!

Care of our environment is integral to the Montessori philosophy, as an education which connects to the beauty of the natural world. “The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the earth,” said Dr. Maria Montessori.

At Sonnet Montessori, we intentionally incorporate natural elements into our classrooms, including plant life. Our time outdoors varies by age group and temperature/head index/wind chill factor, but typically enjoy 1.5-2 hours outdoors a day! We safely enjoy a variety of outdoor weather, putting on rain suits and rain boots and jumping in puddles on rainy fall or spring days, layering up our winter outerwear and enjoying the brisk cool air and snow crunching beneath our feet in the winter, and cooling off under a sprinkler on warm summer days!

“Let the children be free; encourage them; let them run outside when it is raining; let them remove their shoes when they find a puddle of water; and, when the grass of the meadows is damp with dew, let them run on it and trample it with their bare feet; let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath its shade; let them shout and laugh when the sun wakes them in the morning as it wakes every living creature that divides its day between waking and sleeping.” – Maria Montessori

During our Earth Week, we cleaned up around our school and our immediate neighborhood.

We also designed and wrote thank you cards for our local garbage and recycling companies.

We learned about pollution, and how our plants absorb many things from our environment.

We practiced sorting activities, such as recycling, organics and trash, and our Toddler Community friends enjoyed their “trash collection” activity!

We also enjoyed several hands-on craft activities in our Infant, Toddler and Children’s House Communities, scavenger hunts, upcycling materials, and learned every day during our circle time about our earth and how to take care of it!
